Free : Survivors #3

cover/back illustration + layout design / 30 pages / 2020

the client: Survived & Punished

the project: I designed the layout and illustrated the cover for the third issue of the Free: Survivors newsletter. The newsletter is an inside/outside publication featuring artwork and writing from survivors in prison alongside information about S&P’s organizing work on the outside. The newsletter was mailed to incarcerated survivors and used as a fundraising tool for supporters of S&P’s work.

my approach: This was the third issue of S&P’s newsletter (the second I designed), and we had heard from some survivors inside that they had taken out artwork from the previous newsletters to decorate their spaces. Knowing this, I wanted to create a large wraparound cover showing a safe and loving community that could be colored in or hung up on a wall. So often the imagery for artwork centering survivors in prison features chains or other symbols of incarceration and I wanted to purposely veer away from that for this project.

Free : Survivors #2

newsletter cover illustration + layout design / 26 pages / 2019

the client: Survived & Punished

the project: I was commissioned to design the layout and create a cover illustration for the second issue of the Free: Survivors newsletter.

my approach: For the cover I illustrated survivors who were part of Survived & Punished’s clemency campaign together. To me this represented the abolitionist vision of S&P’s work that one day they would be free from incarceration/ isolation and highlighted the newsletter’s goal of bringing survivors and comrades together despite prison walls.
